The Right Kind Of Addiction
Yesterday was Mardi Gras 2010! A holiday I LOVED when I lived in Florida and could go party at Pleasure Island with all my crazy Disney friends. I have so many great memories and I am so grateful I was able to party like a rock star back then.
But now its I have lots of little children and fun holidays are spent a little differently…but still a great time!
This year we were invited to a rehabilitation and retirement center for their Mardi Gras party, to help out and spread cheer.
We had a really nice time, and were so happy and touched to have the chance to help in making these wonderful people forget, if even just for 1/2 hour where they were.
There are sooo many ways to help people, and it is a memory that will stay with you forever, just like my my rock star days, yet it feels even better.
I will never forget all the times my family and I have shown up in a children’s home to hide Easter eggs, or a retirement home to pass out homemade crosses, or to homeless shelters to pass out hugs. Sure its awkward at first for everyone, but once you remember why you are there and jump on in, it becomes so right.
It really is a natural high when you look into their eyes and see the sadness or worry move to the side, and for that moment feel like everything is gonna be alright, and to know that you made that happen for them.
Its addiction I wish everyone had.
I know everyone gets busy, and it may seem like a lot of work, but if you are ever free, all you need is Google and a phone, call around and see where you fit in, in your community. Check online volunteer search engines, you never know what you may find. Next month we get to go take care of mare foals!!!
You can even go read to dogs in animal shelters, gather blankets for babies in hospitals! There are so many people that need us, not our money but our love.
You only live once, and the gift of making other people feel happy, is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have, and to see your children right there with you, feels comparable to the minute you brought them into this world.
So please, think about it, and maybe you can get addicted too:)
